Pumpkin Carving

What a full day we had today! Storytime at Barnes & Noble this morning (which the kids all wore their costumes to), pastor appreciation dinner at church this evening, and while Cora napped this afternoon, Dan and I carved pumpkins with the boys for the first time. Aiden and Seth had carved pumpkins last fall when they had visited Alvana and David for the weekend. (Well, perhaps I should say that the boys got to watch Uncle David carve pumpkins last year... they weren't really into it too much, but they loved the work that their uncle did for them!) Yesterday, the boys had figured out what they wanted designed on their pumpkins - a tiger for Aiden, a scary face for Seth and Cora asked for a kitty. After checking out the free pumpkin carving patterns online, we decided that a tiger was going to be much too detailed to attempt. Although the turtle that was Aiden's second choice was also quite intricate. They were a little grossed out by the inside of the pumpkins, but they did help scrape out the insides.
After taping on the patterns, both the boys went to work tracing them onto the pumpkin with nails. They quickly tired of that work, and so did Dan and I as our hands cramped up from holding such a small tool.
Dan, who has had a lot more experience with detailed pumpkin carving, did all of the turtle and face, which I stuck to the simple cat outline.
All three kids were very excited about the end result...
and they all looked really great in the dark!
